VICTORY!  OlyWest on Ice
Jan. 15, 2007—A year of public outrage has taken what could be the final toll on the proposal to build a massive hog slaughter plant in St. Boniface. With two of the OlyWest consortium's three partners out of the deal, today Manitoba's Clean Environment Commission cancelled the critical public hearings necessary for the remaining partner, hog producer Hytek, to obtain a building license. Hytek will have to submit a new business plan; but observers doubt it will obtain the financial backing it needs now that citizens and activists have persuaded politicians that an expanding hog industry is a political liability.
